Imagine a child of seven, quite beautiful, but who screams uncontrollably. cannot talk and cannot recognise her mother's love. Her body is perfect though her mind Is not.

In the first part of this programme the Hodges tell the story of Ann's release from her very private world. But what is autism, what are the problems of diagnosis and treatment, and what help is available? That is the theme of the discussion which follows the story of Ann, between three experts on autism:
DR LORNA WING, member of the Scientific Staff of the Medical Research Council
DR NEIL O'CONNOR. Director of the urc's Developmental Psychology Unit

Network Special with BBC Local Radio
Radio 4 stays open late to bring you the results of today's local elections in England and Wales. in which 35 million people are entitled to vote.
The whole system of local government has been drastically changed. New authorities have been created, and old ones swept away. Who will run the six giant Metropolitan Counties outside London? Who will control the other County Councils, many of them with new names and new boundaries? Who will win Greater London, where the results may have a special significance because the elections are being fought on the same boundaries as the next General Election?
In this co-production between Network News and Current Affairs in London and the BBC Local Radio Stations, you can hear results and comments from all over the country. In the Election Studio:
ANTHONY KING , Professor of Government, University of Essex
ROBERT CARVEL. Political Editor. London Evening standard
Chairman Hardiman Scott , the BBC's Political Editor
Production team DENNIS LOWER JOHN TURTLE. MARTIN COX Co-production editor BERNARD TATE
