Twenty years after Ellington's death, this American documentary showing in the Omnibus slot tonight and next week celebrates the life and work of one of America's greatest composers. As the leading musical impresario George Wein says: "There is an Ellington sound that will be with us until time runs out."
Born in 1899, Ellington and his orchestra became resident at Harlem's Cotton Club in 1927, and thanks to networked radio broadcasts his innovative music, exploring new tonal and structural ideas, reached a huge and racially mixed audience.
The film includes rare footage of the bandleader in performance, and the soundtrack contains more than 40 of his 1,500 compositions.
