Inspired by the real-life case of four nurses in Austria who were tried for the murder of 42 patients in their care, this chilling drama stars comedian Dawn French in her first serious role, as an apparently irreproachable carer.
It is written by Lucy Gannon (Peak Practice and Soldier, Soldier), herself a former night nurse. "When we look for outward signs of evil or madness, we are playing the innocent fool. The worst murderer in the world can appear to be the most benevolent, mild, ordinary creature," says Gannon, whose additional drama credits include Testimony of a Child and Keeping Tom Nice.
A strong supporting cast includes Joan Sims, Rosemary Leach, Gemma Jones, and "Kilroy" as himself.
Night nurse Elaine Dobbs may be overworked and underpaid, but she has created a very special atmosphere in her ward and is extremely attentive to her patients. However, rather too many of them are dying.
Producer Louise Panton ; Director Dewi Humphreys

Beggar, ThyNeighbour
Some clergymen believe it is wrong to give money to beggars, others that it is our duty. The Bible, of course, encourages generosity, but what of fraudulent beggars on the streets? Heart of the Matter talks to clergy with radically opposed opinions and Joan Bakewell spends a day on the streets with a beggar and meets the priest who occasionally buys a drink for down-and-outs.
