As Michael Elphick gets into the swing of portrayinga regional hack in the fourth episode of this new drama series, his real-life
Fleet Street counterparts have been arguing about the authenticity of Harry's character. "The popular image of the grizzled old hack is yesterday's news," said The Daily Express, while Nancy Banks-Smith in The Guardian applauded Elphick's "voice like a sand-blasted camel" and world-weary air ("he could melt his phone with his own stomach acid").
Harry's fictional Fleet Street colleagues feature in this week's episode when an ex-army officer is murdered on his patch.
Harry goes off in hot pursuit of the IRA suspects, intent on selling the story to the national papers, but finds that the real villain is somewhat nearer home.
