Golf: the Open
Coverage of the third day, from Royal St George's, Sandwich. Defending champion Nick Faldo has been victorious in three of the last six Open Championships and is recognised as the man to beat. Another British player, Sandy Lyle, won the last Open held at Sandwich, in 1985. This year, Bernhard Langer will be expected to lead the overseas challenge, after victories in the US Masters and the Volvo PGA Championship at Wentworth. In contrast, three-times Open champion Seve Ballesteros has had a wretched season and knows there could not be a more opportune time for him to return to form. Ryder Cup stars Ian Woosnam, Colin Montgomerie and Sam Torrance will be among the leading British players hoping to mount a challenge.
