David Attenborough's 12 favourite Wildlife on One programmes, which he has chosen from more than editions shown over the past 16 years of the series.
One of the best-loved Wildlife on One programmes, the film in which the now-famous meerkats popped up their heads was shown for the first time in 1987. Meerkats are not, in fact, related to cats but are mongooses, and for the best part of a year, cameraman Richard Goss followed a family of them in their hostile Kalahari desert home. He was there when the team hunted, when babies were born, and as they grew up. He also discovered that the secret of the gang's survival seemed to lie in their teamwork. His extraordinary and delightful footage shows them as they help each other to protect the youngsters, share their foods and take on all adversaries - from snakes, scorpions and jackals to their greatest threat, another team of meerkats. Narrated by David Attenborough.
