But anyone expecting to see more of the same in his new series is in for a surprise, because Cop Rock is a whole new concept in police drama. Influenced by Dennis Potter 's innovative
Pennies from Heaven, it's part opera, part rock concert, part drama, set in the Los Angeles police department, with songs by Randy Newman. Heading the cast is Bochco's wife, Barbara Bosson (
Frank Furillo 's wife in Hill Street
Blues). Narcotics detective
Vincent LaRusso leads a raid on a suspected drugs den at which several people are arrested. When a suspect - out on bail because of prison overcrowding - later guns down a police officer, LaRusso decides it's time he took the law into his own hands.
