To be a Christian in South
Africa today and be true to the confession of the Church that Jesus Christ is Lord, you have to be engaged in the struggle against apartheid.
On the eve of Nelson Mandela's 70th birthday - his
26th in prison -
Joan Bakewell talks to
Mandela's compatriot, Dutch Reform Church leader, The Rev Allan Boesak.
With many other avenues of protest closed to blacks, many believe the moral arguments of religious leaders are now the only hope for South Africa. Allan Boesak is in a unique position in the anti-apartheid struggle because of his background in the very same church which once defended apartheid. This programme examines those original theological arguments, and asks what many Christians in South Africa now feel to be their duty. Is there room for peaceful reconciliation, or is a violent struggle now the only option? How should
Christians outside South
Africa respond, and what is the future for white
Christians in South Africa, if apartheid were to be abolished?
