From Bitter Earth - Artists of the Holocaust
Over 30,000 drawings and paintings have survived the concentration camps, ghettoes and hiding places of the Second World War. How was such creativity possible in the face of death, when often even to carry a pencil was punishable by hanging? , Most of the artists who created this work perished.
But some survived, and in ' this film painters like Yehuda Bacon , Dinah Gottliebova and Walter Spitzer reveal the stories behind their work.
Some of them became 'official artists', doing anything from signpainting to painting landscapes for the Nazi authorities. At the same time, they left us with a vision of the German death-machine, more affecting and powerful than any camera image. This film tells of the extraordinary perserverence and ingenuity that these artists showed, and is a tribute to the resilience of human creativity in the midst of destruction.
