Captain MacTaggart is skipper of one of the last individually-owned puffer boats still plying up and down the west coast of Scotland. But the Maggie, which he loves more dearly than life itself, is destined for the scrapyard unless he can win a profitable cargo away from one of the big shipping companies. When chance and a misunderstanding throw just such a cargo his way, MacTaggart finds the job anything but plain sailing.
