starring James Coburn, Maximilian Schell, James Mason
The eastern front, 1943; the once triumphant German Wehrmacht is forced into a humiliating retreat by the advancing Russian Army. Sgt Steiner, a professional short on discipline but long on medals, comes into conflict with Capt Stransky, an arrogant Prussian obsessed with defunct values of glory who is determined to win an Iron Cross - by any means he can. Sam Peckinpah's uncompromising and graphic film highlights the horror and futility of war.
