George Gershwin Remembered
'It seems to me beyond doubt that Gershwin was an innovator.... he was an artist, a composer who expressed musical ideas - and they were new.' ARNOLD SCHOENBERG The man who opened up the concert hall to jazz died on 11 July 1937 at the tragically early age of 38. This film evokes the life and work of a major figure in 20th century music through the eyes of the few surviving people who worked with him. The programme includes extracts from Gershwin's best-known works, including Porgy and Bess, An American in Paris,
Shall We Dance, and Lady Be Good. A wealth of unknown home movies and private recordings preserved in the Gershwin family complete the picture.
