Cliff Michelmore begins a series of summer journeys from Buckinghamshire to County Durham via
Plymouth, London and Berkshire to meet an actress and a bishop, a singer and a violinist and a doctor and the Salvation Army general at home on Sunday.
His first visit is to the home of Val Doonican , who has been a popular entertainer for more than 30 years.
Val is also a life-long Roman Catholic. He talks to Cliff about his life and his faith and chooses some of his favourite religious music including 'Panis angelicus' and 'Light the candles', sung by the Choir of St Philip's, Norbury. French countryside, mid-1918. With the tank proving an effective weapon and the Americans entering the war, the tide turns in the Allies' favour. Pat Cleary decides to go souvenir-hunting and Martin becomes engaged to Kate. While Roly is hospitalised the order comes through to disband the 60th battalion, and the 'originals' must decide whether to comply or mutiny.
After the Armistice there is time for reunion, and time to remember all those who would never be coming home.
