The Story of P&O
Privileged passengers, the rulers of Empire, always booked cabins on the cooler side of the ship: port going out, starboard coming home - 'posh'. For generations P&O epitomised the Raj and Empire 'east of Suez' - as is recalled by veteran passengers including
Spike Milligan , Denis Compton and Sir John Hackett.
In both world wars, and in various smaller campaigns such as the Falklands conflict, P&O liners have served as troopships and armed escorts. Indeed, the son of a captain who was killed in an heroic action against German battleships is tonight's narrator: Ludovic Kennedy
On Tuesday, HM The Queen was aboard the Pacific
Princess at Greenwich to celebrate the 150th anniversary of one of the most illustrious of British shipping lines.
