The last of a natural history of Britain and Ireland, presented by Julian Pettifer New Landscapes
Much of our wildlife has found refuge in our 20th-century landscapes. The new wetlands of gravel pits and reservoirs shelter great crested grebes and cormorants, and sand martins excavate homes in working quarries. On the man-made cliffs of industry ravens and mistle thrushes nest, while the cooled slag of a steel works becomes carpeted by vivid flowers teeming with insect life. Even motorway verges have become havens for wildlife. These unofficial nature reserves supplement those that preserve more ancient, fragile landscapes.

from Larne
Roger Royle takes the shortest sea journey (just 80 minutes) between Britain and Ireland and arrives in the busy ferry port of Larne. 'Gateway to Ulster' and 'Gateway to the Glens', Lame caters for the industrialist and welcomes the tourist. Its people still embrace an age-old faith, as Roger discovers on board Hammy Robinson 's small ferry boat. The wiry boatman respects the mighty power of the sea, but 'St Patrick blessed the ferry that nobody would ever drown on it; and nobody has'. Rejoice, the Lord is King (Darwall's 148th); To the name of our salvation (Grafton): How great thou art!; Dear Lord and Father of mankind
(Repton); Father, who on man dost shower (Quem Pastores Laudavere): Fight the good fight (Duke Street); What a friend we have in Jesus
(Converse); Lord, who in thy perfect wisdom (Blaenwam)

by Agatha Christie, dramatised in three parts by T.R. Bowen
with Joan Hickson as Miss Marple, Gwen Watford as Mrs Bantry, Andrew Cruickshank as Conway Jefferson, Moray Watson as Col. Bantry, Valentine Dyall as Lorrimer, Frederick Jaeger as Col. Melchett, David Horovitch as Det. Insp. Slack, Anthony Smee as Basil Blake, Ciaran Madden as Adelaide Jefferson, Jess Conrad as Raymond Starr, Trudie Styler as Josie Turner

Early summer, sometime in the late 40s... St Mary Mead - a very ordinary, very English village in the Home Counties... One morning the Bantrys wake up to find that everything is suddenly far from ordinary... They call their friend, the elderly spinster Jane Marple, to help unravel the disturbingly novelettish mystery in which they find themselves entangled.
The investigation takes them to a seaside hotel where some rather unusual people are staying...
