A Journey in Space and Time Heroes and Men
What do we owe the ancient Greeks? In the third film in this four-part series the distinguished Greek scholar Sir Kenneth Dover , President of Corpus Christi College, Oxford, and Christopher Burstall , director of the four films, look especially at the work of Homer and Aeschylus. Homer lived some time in the 700s BC and his epic tales of sweeping adventure became a source of inspiration and belief for Greeks who came after him. Aeschylus, who lived in the 5th century BC was the first great poet ever to write tragedies, and he took the story of his trilogy The Oresteia from Homer's world of myth, of gods and heroes and men. Homer and Aeschylus are the corner-stone of Western literature. They looked at their own world, and what they saw is still part of us today. in scenes from Homer, Aeschylus and other Greek writers
