Courage that spans 2000 years ...
The marathon commemorates an epic run by a Greek courier after the Battle of Marathon in 490BC.The outnumbered Greeks defeated the invading Persians - and an Olympic champion runner, Pheidippides, carried the news the 22 miles from Marathon to Athens. He fell dead gasping the words, 'Rejoice, we conquer'. The modern marathon is run over 26 miles 385 yards, a distance which arose out of the 1908 Games in London.The race was to have been exactly 26 miles, from Windsor to the White City Stadium. But the organisers wanted the race to finish in front of the Royal Box - and that added the 385 yards.The marathon is the most punishing race of all - it is road work all the way and runners have been attacked by dogs, knocked down by cars and motor-cycles and almost gassed by traffic fumes. And after about 20 miles, to use the runners' own phrase, they wait 'to hit the wall' - the moment at which they reach the point of collapse. Only those with iron resolve survive the wall. Such an athlete is America's 28-year-old Frank Shorter, who is defending the gold medal he took at Munich.
