This week's Jackanory stories are all about wizards, witches and sorcerers. They are of every kind; a wicked Russian witch with sea serpents at her command, a kind Welsh witch who can make the corn grow and the hens lay eggs, and a rather junior sorcerer who sends an old man on the strangest journey of his life.

See an osprey dive for fish; a pine marten scamper after squirrels; a red deer stag take a mud bath; a reindeer graze on the roof of Great Britain.

Given the grim task of seeking survivors on Omicron Ceti III, which has become exposed to deadly rays, Captain Kirk is astounded to find everyone wonderfully well.
Furthermore, the colonists are extraordinarily content with their condition and he becomes baffled and then, fortunately as it transpires, enraged at the insidious effect their behaviour has on his crew, even the unimpressionable Spock succumbing to the seduction.

A journey with David Attenborough

A thousand square miles of unexplored country in the centre or New Guinea; from the air it looked little different from the rest of the jungle-covered mountains that fill most of the island s interior. But then photographs for an aerial survey unexpectedly showed a few tiny clearings. It could be that, hidden in the forest, there lived people still uncontacted by the outside world. So a patrol officer, with 100 carriers, set out to walk straight across the blank patch, to plot its rivers, measure its mountains and see just what did live in its forests.
