John Newton died in 1807, the year that Parliament abolished a trade in which he had once been employed - that of slavery. The story of his transition from slaver to abolitionist, from libertine to preacher, is told in this programme - much of it in his own words and some of it reflected in his hymns. These are sung by a choir from the church of which he was rector at the time of his death.

The Church of England and the Methodist Church have been divided for over two hundred years. In ten days' time the Methodist Conference meeting in Birmingham and the Convocations of the Church of England will vote on the future relations of the two Churches. Tonight in the Methodist Central Hall, Coventry, both denominations, together with members of the Congregational Church and Salvation Army, unite in Songs of Praise.

There have been more than twenty Princes of Wales before the one who is to be invested next Tuesday at Caernarvon Castle. Centuries ago the title was invented by the Welsh. Since Edward I conquered Wales and filled the land with his formidable castles, it has been the prerogative of the monarchs of England to bestow the title on their eldest sons.
This programme tells the story of this famous office and looks at some of the fascinating men, both Welsh and English, who have held or claimed it.
