Seeing and Believing: John Newton

on BBC One London

The story of an ancient mariner by F.C. Gill.
With John Graham, Richard Leech and Singers' Workshop of St. Mary Woolnoth
From the Church of All Hallows, London Wall

John Newton died in 1807, the year that Parliament abolished a trade in which he had once been employed - that of slavery. The story of his transition from slaver to abolitionist, from libertine to preacher, is told in this programme - much of it in his own words and some of it reflected in his hymns. These are sung by a choir from the church of which he was rector at the time of his death.
