Feature films with suspense, danger, excitement
Starring Edward G. Robinson, Loretta Young, Orson Welles

A notorious war criminal has made his way from Europe, and Wilson, a detective, is determined to bring him to justice. A former aide of the man, Konrad Meinike, is permitted to escape, and Wilson follows him to America. In the little town of Harper he loses the trail, but only after Meinike has nearly succeeded in murdering him. Wilson, however, persists in his investigations for he is convinced that the fugitive is now living the life of a respected citizen...
At the time tonight's film was made Orson Welles was suffering from a surfeit of acclaim following the critical success of Citizen Kane and The Magnificent Ambersons. However, these movies had not been box-office successes and the major studios tended to fight shy of engaging this director with a reputation as a tyrannical enfant terrible. But one independent producer, S.P. Eagle (later, Sam Spiegel) was prepared to take the risk and the result was The Stranger, a tough and thought-provoking drama. Though the critics treated it roughly at the time, the film now stands out among the best dramas of the period.

Each week 25,000 tons of newsprint, 50 hours of news bulletins, One man:
Bernard Braden and his team, John Pitman, Esther Rantzen, take a look at some of the things that happened - and some of the things that didn't.
Song of the week: Jake Thackray
Children of the week: Harold Williamson

There is one piece of blatant cheating in Braden's Week. Each week when Bernard walks to his desk, Esther Rantzen or John Pitman hands him a piece of paper. Theoretically this is meant to be one of the odd headlines or misprints that Bernard quotes at the beginning of the programme. In practice it usually turns out to be a note saying 'Your trousers are falling down,' or 'Your middle name is Cuthbert.' From that, you might think that Esther and John don't regard Bernard with the awe and deference due to a man in his position. You would be quite right. They don't. But there is one thing that does cause friction on the Braden team. John Pitman gets letters from schoolgirls saying 'I think you're lovely.' All Esther Rantzen's fan letters seem to come from old-age pensioners. Not that it worries Esther - much.
