The Saturday Thriller: The Stranger

on BBC One London

Feature films with suspense, danger, excitement
Starring Edward G. Robinson, Loretta Young, Orson Welles

A notorious war criminal has made his way from Europe, and Wilson, a detective, is determined to bring him to justice. A former aide of the man, Konrad Meinike, is permitted to escape, and Wilson follows him to America. In the little town of Harper he loses the trail, but only after Meinike has nearly succeeded in murdering him. Wilson, however, persists in his investigations for he is convinced that the fugitive is now living the life of a respected citizen...
At the time tonight's film was made Orson Welles was suffering from a surfeit of acclaim following the critical success of Citizen Kane and The Magnificent Ambersons. However, these movies had not been box-office successes and the major studios tended to fight shy of engaging this director with a reputation as a tyrannical enfant terrible. But one independent producer, S.P. Eagle (later, Sam Spiegel) was prepared to take the risk and the result was The Stranger, a tough and thought-provoking drama. Though the critics treated it roughly at the time, the film now stands out among the best dramas of the period.
