Professor Kark speaks about the severe health problems among Africans created by the processes of social and cultural change. He stresses that the matter is far wider than diseases directly due to urban slum conditions, and therefore takes as particular illustration a rural community in Natal where he was responsible for the establishment of a pioneer health centre.

Flowering plants are the predominant plants over most of the world--conifer forests apart-and they provide us with most of our food; yet we know very little about their origin. In this talk Professor Harris considers the available evidence and the difficulties posed by it, and indicates the more hopeful lines of research.
