Speakers:
Herbert Howells, King Edward Professor of Music in the University of London
The Rev. Erik Routley, Minister of the Augustine-Bristo Congregational Church, Edinburgh
Alec Robertson
In a book Church Music and Theology, published last year, Erik Routley argued the relevance of moral theology and doctrine to the composition and performance of church music. Alec Robert son invites Dr. Routley, as a historian and critic of church music, and Dr. Howells, as a leading composer in this field, to comment on an argument which raises issues of principle and practice. The discussion is illustrated with recorded excerpts of English church music, ranging from Victorian anthem to ' anglicised' Gelineau chant and Beaumont's Folk Mass.
