A Recital of Settings of his Poetry

This programme consists of settings, by Polish, Russian, and German composers, of poems by the Polish poet and patriot, the centenary of whose death was marked last Saturday in a broadcast talk by L. R. Lewitter.
Mickiewicz lived for some years in Paris, where he knew Chopin; and the recital includes one of the two settings of Mickiewicz made by Chopin. Moniuszko is represented by three songs, one of which is a Polish translation of Goethe's ' Kennst du das Land? ' One of the two songs by Tchaikovsky, ' Moja pieszczotka,* has words which have been set by at least six other composers. Also included are settings of Mickiewicz's poems by Cui (the Russian composer who spent his youth in Poland), Loewe. Rimsky-Korsakov, and Paderewski.
Coronary Thrombosis and the Middle-Aged Man
Talk by J. N. Morris
Dr. Morris is Director of the Social Medicine Research Unit of the Medical Research Council. In this talk he explains that middle-aged men have recently become, in epidemiological terms, ' a vulnerable group '; in their case the death rate is now ninety per cent higher than it is for middle-aged women. The speaker briefly considers the changing character of public health problems.
