Reviewing the growth of the liberal tradition of British historiography during the past century, Professor Gibbs protests that ' we have too often simply labelled war an evil without analysing its nature; we have avoided the study of the history of war because we have considered war " bad." But this,' he adds, ' is not the way of wisdom in any form of human experience.'

' We might think of metaphysical theories ot history as being in some respects like diagrams ... Like diagrams these theories may be illuminating and suggestive,' but they must not be supposed to comprehend or account for all history.
