Hans GaJ, Lecturer in Music at Edinburgh University, wrote his Suite in 1940 in an internment camp at Huyton, near Liverpool. Music was scarce and the work was soored for the only instrumentalists available; a bugle signal (the daily morning call) is quoted in the first and last movements. John Lambert, born in 1926, wrote this song-cycle in 1950; the poems, by sixteenth- and seventeenth-century writers, probe the wonder and mysticism of the Nativity. In 1950 Kenneth V. Jones gained the Octavia Travelling Scholarship and Royal Philharmonic Society's prize for composition. H.C.-F.
