When the Spaniards, under Francesco Pizarro, conquered Peru, they discovered a race of people living in one of the world's most ancient civilisations. In this afternoon's broadcast you will learn how Atahualpa was lured into his own fortress and trapped by the Spaniards; how he was promised freedom in exchange for a ransom; how that ransom was collected and how in spite of this the Inca was betrayed and executed on a trumped-up charge of treasonable plotting.
In the course of the broadcast you will hear about the social life and culture of the Incan civilisation, and also about the Incan religion which had a lot to do with the charges against Atahualpa.

The start described by Victor Smythe from the RoodeYe Racecourse, Chester The basin-shaped formation of the Chester course, especially in long distance races, is ideal for commentators, and Thomas Woodrooffe , from his Position on the Grand Stand, may Well be wishing at the ' off' that all his racing commentaries were as easy ; for runners on this circus-like race-track are visible without glasses all the way round. A great jockey has related how as a boy he played truant from school and watched the race for the Chester Cup from the famous old city wall. Thrilled by his first experience of a big race, Steve Donoghue left with the one hope and ambition that one day he would ride the winner. His dream was realised when in 1915 he rode Hare Hill to victory. It is of interest that he trains an entry in today s race in Nettleweed.
The Chester Cup Stakes are run over the Old Cup Course, 2 miles, 2 furlongs and 77 yards. The winner receives 2,000 sovs (including a Cup value 5U sovs.) in addition to entrance moneys; the' second 250 sovs., and the third 150 sovs. In addition, three champion Cheshire Cheeses are awarded.
