Some Social Experiments
Described-2
' The Draining of the Pontine
Marshes'
C. J. S. Sprigge and Percy Ford , Ph.D., Professor of Economics,
University College, Southampton
This evening's speaker has lived for some time in Italy and has made a particular study of public works in that country. None of these are more remarkable than the ambitious project for the draining of the Pontine Marshes, and setting up in what was previously a fever-ridden swamp a number of prosperous and well-planned communities in brand-new towns. Sprigge will describe this experiment in some detail.
Professor P. Ford will again be in the studio to discuss the relevance of the week's subject to conditions in this country. Although no scheme of the same kind has been carried out here much has been done in the field of land settlement through the transference of the population from depressed areas to rural parts of the country in need of development.

Conducted by Louis Levy
1929 is the most recent year to be covered in any of these popular ' Scrapbook' features, and is the twentieth year to be dealt with. Although a mere ten years have passed since 1929 enormous changes have taken place both in the national life and in the world outside. 1929 was a sunny, bright, and tuneful year. Europe was untroubled, and the main International question was that of disarmament. Philip Snowden, Britain's ' Iron Chancellor', spoke stern words at the Reparations Conference. Margaret Bondfield was the first woman Cabinet minister.
The airship R101 was launched, and Byrd flew to the South Pole.
