A serial reading from Herman Melville's 'Moby Dick'
During the last few weeks Geoffrey Tandy has been reading to you how Ishmael shipped in a whaleman from Nantucket, and how from the first the voyage has been full of mystery and foreboding because of the behaviour of her captain - Ahab. Even his officers do not know what to make of him. He rarely speaks, and when he does it is with un-reasoned outbursts which lapse into moody soliloquies addressed only to himself or to the sea.
In this instalment Ishmael and the whole ship's company are to learn at last what it is that possesses this strange old man, and this is the first climax of Melville's book. He presents it dramatically, and the broadcast must present it in the same way. The part of Ahab is played by Robert Farquharson.

Olaf Bloch, who is chief chemist of a large firm of photographic chemists, will discuss some of the manifold uses to which photography is put in the service of science, and consequently mankind. Photography today may indeed be called the 'recording angel' of modern life, for there is scarcely an activity with which it does not concern itself, from the building of bridges to the detection of criminals. High-speed cameras can record the processes of splitting the atom, the marvellous lenses of today are invaluable in X-ray work, and it goes without saying that if it were not for photography only a small proportion of man's present knowledge of the stars would be possible.
Making a photographic film is a process that must be carried out with the utmost care. Girls working in a film factory must be vacuum-cleaned before they enter, lest dust get on to the emulsion with which the film is coated.
