' Nuns in Far-Away Lands '
A Franciscan Missionary of Mary
Today's missionary talk will be given by one of the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary, an organisation of missionary nuns whose work takes them all over the world, Their organisation is responsible for eleven leper institutions in Burma, Ceylon, China, Japan, Annam, and the Congo, and it has 168 dispensaries in various lands. There are some ^ seven thousand of these Roman Catholic Sisters taking part in this work. The speaker will deal not only with the leper work in Burma with which she has been particularly associated, but with child welfare activities in the Congo, nursing in Ceylon, relief work in the war zone in China, and other forms of service.

Wilhelmj ORCHESTRA Overture, A May Night Rimsky-Korsakov Gogol's collection of short stories, ' Evenings on a farm near Dikanka ', has been a fruitful source of inspiration to Russian opera composers. Mussorgsky's Fair at Sorochintsy, Tchaikovsky's Vakula the Smith, Rimsky-Korsakov's A May Night and Christmas Eve-all these works are based on Gogot's delightful, humorous-fantastic tales of village life in the Ukraine. ' A May Night' had been a favourite tale of Rimsky-Korsakov's from childhood ; he read it with his lady-love on the day he proposed to her ; and it was his wife who finally persuaded him to make an opera of it. The opera (written in 1878) was Korsakov's second and, as listeners will gather from the overture, is one of his most tuneful and lyrical compositions, by no means depending on orchestral colour for its effect.

An appeal on behalf of THE ROYAL EAST SUSSEX HOSPITAL,
HASTINGS by JOHN GIELGUD
The Royal East Sussex Hospital was opened in 1841 and has been the principal source of relief of the sick and suffering in Hastings and East Sussex ever since. Twice rebuilt, the hospital now stands in large grounds overlooking the sea, and contains accommodation for 143 in-patients, out-patient consulting rooms, orthopaedic gymnasium, massage and electrical rooms, pathological laboratories, ophthalmic wards, modern operating theatres, and a very beautiful children's ward, surrounded by balconies. Last, but not least, there is a modern home for the nursing staff.
But unhappily there is a shortage of £31,000, mainly on maintenance account, and unless this sum is speedily forthcoming the service given by the hospital must necessarily be restricted. Last year alone 2,281 in-patients were admitted, and the 12,924 out-patients were treated no fewer than 76,189 times. Nor should it be overlooked that patients from homes all over the country were admitted to the hospital as the result of illness or accident while they were on holiday or on business in the district.
