Bees and Fruit
R. Gamble and H. A. Haile
Today Reginald Gamble is to give practical bee-keeping a holiday and tell us something of the work of the bee. especially in regard to fruit growing, and how it comes about that nowadays the bee is more important to us than in the past-how, in fact, it has become essential. He is also going to ask us to watch bees at work and make a note of our observations. With him will be
Mr. H. A. Haile , general manager of a large fruit-growing firm in the Wisbech district, who will tell us of some of the experiments he has carried out in connection with bees and fruit.

A running commentary on the race by R.C. Lyle from the Manchester Racecourse, Castle Irwell
The Lancashire Steeplechase, originally instituted in 1884, is a handicap for horses of all ages, run over a distance of 3½ miles over 23 fences, in which the water is jumped twice. In 1902 it was first run on the present course at Castle Irwell.
Since the race was instituted, three horses have put up the extraordinary achievement of winning both the Grand National and the Lancashire
Steeplechase in the same year: Ilex, in 1890, Eremon, in 1907, and that superb jumper, Poethlyn, in 1918 and 1919. The Lancashire Steeplechase is renowned for being a very fast-run race-and it is a great spectacle, for the horses make nearly three circuits of the course and pass the stands three times. The start takes place immediately opposite the six-shilling ring.
The race is timed to start at 3.30 p.m. and usually takes anything from seven minutes to eight minutes to run. according to weather conditions. There is a parade before the race.
