C. H. Middleton , who talks all the year round to people who have a garden, is to devote his talk today to those who have no garden at all. Many flat-dwellers cannot have so much as a window-box, and yet they can enjoy a modified form of garden even in a flat. He will suggest some plants that may be kept throughout the year, as opposed to those that are finished when their brief flowering day is over.
Those of Middleton's admirers who have not yet heard about his new book, ' With C. H. Middleton in your Garden', published last month, will be glad to know that he has written a third volume based on his broadcast talks. His new book is as full of information as ever and covers the broadcasting year, April, 1936 to April, 1937. Some of the original talks were given in the form of conversations with the various specialists that he has from time to time brought to the microphone. ' I pass them on to you ', he writes in his preface, ' in the hope that you may spend a pleasant hour with me in an imaginary chat about our beloved gardens.'

Serge Krish founded the New Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra in 1934 for the purpose of giving symphony concerts in the East End of London, and thus providing that part of the city with the equivalent of Queen's Hall. In December of that year the orchestra gave its first concert at the Trocadero, Elephant and Castle, with great success. The orchestra consists of eighty musicians of both sexes, the majority of whom are good orchestral musicians who, for many economic reasons, have found it difficult to practise their profession within recent years. The Metropolitan Orchestra, through continual rehearsal under the experienced baton of Serge Krish , attains an excellent ensemble and its progress is also assisted by the active co-operation of many of the leading British singers, violinists, and pianists.

Doctor Barnardo, a social worker about the common lodging-houses of London at the end of last century by A. E. Williams , his last private secretary
Thomas John Barnardo (1845-1905) did Evangelical work in the Dublin sl'j-ns before entering London Hospital as a missionary medical student in 1866. A year later he founded an East-End juvenile mission for destitute children and the following year opened a boys' home in Stepney which was to develop into ' Dr. Barnardo's Homes '. At his death he had assisted 200,000 children.

The oldest parts of this church date from early in the thirteenth century. There was an extensive rebuilding some sixty years ago. The church is unique in having two towers and two peals of bells. The older tower was built by Henry de Rokeby to serve if necessary as a frfrtress. It is the new peal of eight bells which listeners will hear before the service. The Venerable Richard Brook , who gives the address, has been Archdeacon of Coventry and Rector of St. Andrew with Holy Trinity, Rugby, since 1935. He was Head-master of Liverpool College from 1919 to 1928, and Vicar of Don-caster and Canon of Sheffield from 1928 to 1935.

The British force that was defeated at Majuba Hill by the Boers on February 27, 1881, numbered fewer than four hundred men. Yet this apparently minor setback to our arms had far-reaching results. Comparatively little importance had been attached to this earlier Boer War by the home government, and one reverse led them to abandon it altogether. Their attitude was everywhere misunderstood, particularly by the Boers, and was perhaps one of the causes of the far more serious Boer War of eighteen years later.
Sir Ian Hamilton , then a subaltern, was wounded at Majuba. On his return to England, he was summoned to Osborne to dine with Queen Victoria and tell her the whole story. He afterwards wrote out his account for the Duke of Cambridge-and it is this account which he will read to listeners tonight.
