Gaetano di Vito, who has played the violin in symphony orchestras under Toscanini, Mengelberg and Weingartner, and who conducted the Italian Opera Company for three seasons in Holland during the war, is o make his debut on the air today with his newly formed Ladies
Orchestra, of sixteen first-class m-strumentalists. Since the war he has achieved great popularity in the West End of London.
Gaetano was born in Caserto,
Italy, and went with his family to
Antwerp when he was two years old —his father being a piano-tuner of such renown that he was sent for when ' musicians of the calibre of Paderewski came to Antwerp. At nine years of age he was playing the fiddle ; he satisfied the examiners at the Conservatoire at Antwerp by his playing of a Beriot concerto when he was fourteen, and so started on his remarkable career.
His orchestra will be one of the few ladies' light orchestras on the air, and as he plans to give listeners good music of a light semi-classical nature, it should be sure of a welcome.

(From Midland)
Just as cats are used to get rid of mice, toads are used for killing insects, and fishes for killing mosquitos which spread malaria. Insect pests, like the scale insects on orange trees, have been conquered by using their natural enemies, which are ladybirds. The silk industry was nearly ruined by the scale insect on mulberry trees, but this scale insect was conquered by a natural insect parasite. Cactus plants in Australia are a gigantic weed which is now being destroyed by insects brought from America. These, among other things, form the subject of Munro Fox 's talk today.

Mendelssohn's Overture, ' The Hebrides', otherwise known as 'Fingal's Cave', was inspired by a visit paid by the composer to Scotland in 1829. This very beautiful work has well been described as a seascape and it certainly suggests the surge of the sea in all its power and ruggedness. As a piece of musical construction it is perfect in form and the orchestration shows the hand of a delicate and masterly colourist.
