The aim of the talks, each lasting fifteen or twenty minutes, is to induce listeners, by methods as varied and as catholic as possible, to read books and to help them to choose what books to read. Thus new books will not be reviewed except incidentally. But recent books, old books (some forgotten, some classic but unread), and cheap editions will be talked about by speakers drawn from as wide a circle as possible.

J. Ainslie Murray is an Edinburgh man and an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music, where he studied composition and orchestration under the late Frederick Corder. After three years in the artillery during the War, he organised and conducted the Rhine Army Orchestra, which gave a successful series of concerts in Cologne and elsewhere. He conducted one of the Sunday Orchestral Concerts in the Albert Hall and later was one of the conductors of Daly's Theatre. Latterly he has been on the staff of the Gramophone Company. He has several songs published, and has made a new score of the ballet Les Sylphides, which is used by one of the leading Ballet companies.

A discussion between DOROTHY EVANS and GLADYS BURLTON
Dorothy Evans , who is speaking in favour of equal pay for equal work, is General Secretary to the National Association of Women Civil Servants. She is a barrister, stood as Parliamentary candidate for Paddington in 1931, and is President of the Association of Women Clerks and Secretaries.
Gladys Burlton , who is opposing the motion, was one of the first university women to go into business. She now runs the Burlton Institute and has practised for twelve years as a business consultant, specialising in the training of shop assistants. She is the author of various books on the technique of salesmanship and a member of the Council of the Industrial Welfare Society.

The present programme of ' Comic Opera ' consists of excetpts from three now rarely heard operas which when first produced were exceedingly popular. The first, The Emerald Isle, was begun by Sir Arthur Sullivan and finished by Sir Edward German. Before he died, Sullivan completed the first two numbers and noted down the melodies of ten other numbers, including the finale to Act 1. These were orchestrated and, excepting the choruses and concerted parts, harmonised by Sir Edward German , who also contributed nine original numbers.
Offenbach (1819-1880) was one of the leading composers of light opera during the nineteenth century, when it reached the peak of its vogue. This opera, The Grand Duchess of Gerolstein, which is concerned with a temperamental and headstrong lady who ' dotes on the military', was first produced in 1867. Later, this opera found its way to London and enjoyed considerable popularity. It was revived at the Savoy Theatre in -1897. The original English production of Messager's Veronique was given at the Apollo Theatre in 1904. The conductor, Arthur Wood , tells us that it was the first wave of the foreign invasion, and the success of Veronique led to the production of The Little Michus in the following year, and later to that influx of Viennese operettas which began with The Merry Widow and still continues in a number of modern productions.
