Entente Cordiale is a One-act Comic Opera, founded on an absurd incident that happened at a base camp in France during the Armistice, and which was related to the composer by the late Robert Ross as peculiarly adaptable to stage presentment.
Throughout the work many of the bugle calls used in the Army are introduced, among them the beautiful call familiarly known as ' Hot Potatoes'
(which the composer now learns is ascribed to Haydn). Thfs call with its curious entry on the up-beat, supplies the orthodox second theme of the Overture, and towards the end furnishes a sort of pianissimo obbligato to the first phrase of ' Tipperary
Entente Cordiale was introduced at the Royal College of Music and subsequently figured in a one-week operatic venture at Bristol ; but it has never been given at a London theatre.
Dame Ethel Smyth 's Ballet Suite, taken from her opera of the same name is in four movements: (1) Royal Minuet and Musette (the latter being love music) ; (2) Bourrèe (danced by the Court Puppets) ; (3) The Rose Dance (worship by Pierrot of a rose piven him by the Queen) ; (4) The Mad Rout : Arrest of Pierrot: Despair of Columbine: Horror of the Queen: Love music.
This is the argument: It is midnight: there is a masked ball in the Royal Gardens, in which the Court Puppets take part. Pierrot, though Columbine is his mistress, is secretly in love with the Queen, and by chance witnesses an assignation between her and her exiled lover, who is wearing a Pierrot disguise, for the real Pierrot. Mad with jealousy she runs to fetch the King.
Warned by Pierrot, the lover escapes in time, and to save the Queen's honour, Pierrot declares that he himself was the culprit, and the whole thing a Carnival jest. Undeceived but furious, the King bids his guards hang Pierrot on the lintel of the garden temple where the assignation had taken place.
While the final ' Mad Rout', danced by nymphs and satyrs, is being dispersed by the guards, Columbine rushes in nnd swoons at the feet of the swaying corpse. Darkness : Enter the Queen who stands transfixed with horror ; but the music signifies that Pierrot has had the privilege of giving his life for love. (Slow curtain.)
