EXACTLY what the Walker Cup is must be known to all golfers, but it is certainly not known to a large number of listeners who take a catholic interest in all news on the air.
The Walker Cup, then, is to amateur golfers what the better-known Ryder Cup is to professionals. It is played for every two years between British and American amateur golfers, and alternately with the Ryder Cup. This year it is to be competed for at St. Andrews ; in two years' time the British team will have to cross the Atlantic, and it will be 1938 before it is played for in Britain again.
The team is selected by the Royal and Ancient Club of St. Andrews, and consists of ten members. Among those playing today are Roger Wethered, the Hon. Michael Scott (winner of the Amateur Championship last 'year and today's; captain), H. G. Bentley , Cyril Tolley and Jack McLean.
Today foursomes are to be played, and singles tomorrow. This evening and again tomorrow at 9.12 (or 21.12) Bernard Darwin will describe the day's play.
An article on the history of the Walker Cup, by Peter Lawless (' Vagrant' of The Morning Post), will be found on page 341.
