'Prophets '—I
' Thomas Arnold '

ARNOLD OF RUGBY is probably the most famous schoolmaster in English history. ' Tom Brown ' idolised him,
Samuel Butler satirised him, Victorian'England took him as an ideal. That ideal may be rather remote from those of our own age, but, on the other hand, Arnold has many more claims to be remembered than by the way he handled his school, though he was the first to add mathematics, modern history, and modern languages to the ordinary school course, and made Rugby famous.
Both before he went, and during the fourteen years that he spent there, he had many other interests and activities -notably the historical method, ecclesiastical policy, and ' the social question '. Consequently, he figures as the first of the ' Prophets ' in this series, and Dr. C. E. Raven will talk about him this evening.
Thomas Arnold died at the early age of forty-six. His eldest son, Matthew, was the distinguished poet and critic.
' Flowers ', his father used to say,
' are my music ' ; and a pleasant picture , may be visualised of him, walking by the side of his wife's pony. looking for flowers in the hedgerows, and cheering on those of his children who were tired.
That side of Thomas Arnold , who was as simple as he could be stern, as tender as he could be severe, is shown in his son's lines on ' Rugby Chapel

An Appeal on behalf of THE PEOPLE'S
LEAGUE OF HEALTH the AIM and object of the People's League of Health, which is a non-political, non-sectarian body, is the raising of the standard of health of the British nation, by multiplying the sources of education and public information regarding the natural laws of life which govern health.
Distinguished members of the medical profession are to be found on the Joint Councils of the League. Important branches of its work are the League's Safe Milk Campaign to eradicate tuberculosis from the milk supply, and its Pure Food Campaign. The work is carried out by various means. National and Internalional Conferences are arranged, lectures given, examinations held, and travelling scholarships awarded. In various other ways, by public meetings, deputations to the Government, etc., the campaign for health is waged incessantly.
