HUTCHINSON
On December 16, 1922, Saint-Saens died, at the age of eighty-six. His biographer,
. Arthur Hervey , has truly pointed out that ' when Saint-Saens was a boy, Mendelssohn, Chopin, and Schumann were alive ; Meyerbeer was the supreme master of opera ; Berlioz was striving hard, and not too successfully, to obtain recognition; Wagner and Verdi were at the beginning of their glorious careers ; Gounod, having lately won the Prix de Rome, was earning his livelihood as an organist; Dumas, Balzac, Victor Hugo , Georges Sands , were at the zenith of their fame : Louis Philippe , the citizen king, ruled over the French. Between then and now, what a difference! Saint-Saens has lived through these times, and if he felt inclined to refer to them would be amply justified in applying to himself the words of the poet, " Quorum pars magna fui." '
In England today hardly more than three of Saint-Saens's numerous works remain in the repertoire : ' Samson and Delilah,' ' Le Rouet d'Omphale,' and ' Le Cygne ' ; even the violin and piano concertos once so popular with soloists and audiences alike are rarely heard. Saint-Saens is paying the price exacted from all composers who enjoyed during their lifetimes a greater popularity than they really deserved. The time will come, however, when the pendulum will swing back in his favour, but never to the extent it did before.
The Suite Algerienne ' was inspired by a tour of Northern Africa in 1880. The music is both charming and effective, and is suitably imbued with local colour.
