Councillor Gerald W. Crawford , J.P., is a prominent figure in Edinburgh's musical life, particularly as conductor of the Edinburgh Professional Orchestra. His compositions include several operas, symphonies, suites, and rhapsodies. The score of ' Macbeth,' a symphonic poem after Shakespeare's play, contains a number of quotations that act as a rough guide to the music. These appear in the following order : (1) ‘ When shall we three meet again ; in thunder, lightning, or in rain ' ; (2) ' What's the business, that such a hideous trumpet call to parley ' ; (3) ' Fair is foul, and foul is fair ; hover through the fog and filthy air ' ; (4) ' All hail, Macbeth, thou shalt be King hereafter ' ; (5) ' Glamis thou art, and Cawdor, and shalt bo what thou art promis'd. Yet do I fear thy nature ' ; (6) ' I go, and it is done ; the bell invites me. Hear it not Duncan ; for it is a knel! that summons thee to Heaven or Hell ' ; (7) ' I have done the deed. Didst thou hear a noise ? ' ; (8) Methought I heard a voice cry, sleep no more ! Macbeth does murder sleep -the innocent sleep ' ; (9) ' Here lies Duncan, his silvery skin lac'd with his golden blood.'
