The music of this suite was originally written for Sir Nigel Playfair 's production of The Insect Play by the Brothers Capek. The themes used in the short Prologue represent the general character of the music of the play, in the course of which they reappear in various forms, in this instance gradually being turned into a definite waltz movement. A feature of the ' War ' scene is tho march, almost uninterrupted, of the State slaves, first those of labour and later those of war. This is exemplified in the music by a march figure of four notes that is used in different ways throughout, and to which, with other material, is added a theme representing the dull commonplace of the conventional military march. The movement commences with three reiterated fortissimo discords, above which is heard the shrill call of a factory whistle.

Play, 'The Toy Cart '....Alfred Reynolds 1. Romanza; 2. Finale
The Toy Cart Suite is made up from incidental music composed for Arthur Symons 's play of that name. The story is derived from an ancient Indian play of the second century and treats of the love of Charadutta, a Brahmin, for Vasantasena, the Courtesan. A jealous tyrant contrives that Charadutta is falsely accused of the murder of the Courte-Ban and condemned to die. Preceded by the Chandalas and accompanied by a sorrowing multitude, the cortege arrives at the place of execution; Charadutta bares his neck to the axe when in the distance are heard the cheers acclaiming the coming of the new king Aryaka, and the overthrow of the tyrant usurper. At this moment Vasantasena appears, having been saved by the timely ministrations of a mendicant friar; amid general rejoicings the lovers are united.
There are seven movements in the Suite, only two of which are now to be performed. The Finale is largely dominated by the love motive from the Romance, typifying the happy way in which the lovers are at last united

(Played by Troise and his Banjoliers)
Waltz, The Valley of the Moon...... Tobias-Burke This orchestra, almost unique in England, was formed about eighteen months ago. It consists of about sixteen players, most of them armed with mandolins of various sizes-graded just like a string orchestra, violins, 'cellos, etc. Each of these players pan, on occasion, use a banjo; these banjos, too, vary in size and, of course, in pitch. As a background there are accordions and guitars. Obviously everything this orchestra plays has to be specially scored.
