Concerto in D minor - Rubinstein
1. Moderato; 2. Moderato assai; 3. Allegro assai
Anton Rubenstein was born in Russia in 1830, and after receiving piano lessons from his mother and also from a Moscow teacher, Villoing, he made his debut on the concert platform at the age of nine. In the following year Villoing took Rubinstein on a concert tour, visiting, among other places, Paris where he met Liszt, who advised him as to his future studies. In 1842 Rubinstein paid a visit to London and Moscheles heard him play, noting in his diary: "a rival to Thalberg ... a Russian boy whose fingers are as light as feathers, and yet as strong as a man's". Eventually, Rubinstein became one of the greatest pianists - in fact, the only rival of Liszt.

Symphonic Suite, Scheherazade - Rimsky-Korsakov
1. Largo e masestoso; 2. Allegro non troppo; 3. Andantino; 4. Andante quasi allegretto; 5. Allegro molto
Oriental subjects always had a strong fascination for Rimsky-Korsakov, and in this Suite, the East, with its blazing sunshine and its brilliance of colour, is vividly presented in the music. The subject is, of course, from the Arabian Nights, and the composer prefaced his score with the following note: "The Sultan Schahriar, convinced of the infidelity of the whole race of women; has sworn to send each of his wives to death after only one bridal night. But Scheherazade saves her life by interesting him in tales which she recounts one after another for one thousand and one nights. Impelled by curiosity, the Sultan puts off from day to day the fate of the lady and ends, as all the world knows, by renouncing his bloodthirsty intention.
