Casals Symphony Orchestra of Barcelona: Overture, Ruins of Athens (Beethoven)
Pau Casals, one of the outstanding figures of today, is the rare combination of a great 'cellist, a first-rate conductor, and an excellent accompanist. As a composer we cannot yet claim to have made his acquaintance in this country, though he has written several pieces for the 'cello, violin, and pianoforte, a Miserere, and a big choral work called La Vision de Fray Martin. Although hehas been famous in England for about thirty years as one of the greatest of all 'cellists, it is only since 1925 that we have had the opportunity to hear him as a conductor. Soon after the War Casals founded his own orchestra in Barcelona, and conducted the majority of his own concerts. The most striking feature of his work in this direction is his demand for the utmost perfection in phrasing and detail.
