The Antiche Danze ' are arrangements for a modern orchestra by Respighi of old Italian dances and dance tunes. The composers of the first and third are unknown. Giovanni Battista Besardo was a famous lutenist of the sixteenth century ; he was also a scholar of distinction and wrote works on history, philosophy, and medicine. He graduated in Rome, lived for a time in Cologne, and finally in Augsburg, where he died.

Gabriel Faure , who died in 1924, is considered by his countrymen to be one of the greatest of French composers. Yet very little of his music is known in England, despite the fact that his piano pieces and songs, for instance, are full of rare beauty and delicate charm. The song cycle L'Horizon Chimerique, dedicated to Charles Panzera , is an admirable example of Faure's genius.

This organisation was established in 1885 to help the families of serving or ex-serving men who need temporary assistance. During the last war it administered nearly Â£3,000,000 through a thousand local committees and many thousands of voluntary workers. Its peace-time work includes financial assistance and advice, administering funds from other service charities, and assisting in establishing pension claims. Its present urgent need is for funds and for personal and active voluntary service.
