Scena, The Song of Rosamund
The Scena , The Song of Rosamund ' (Op. 36) was specially composed for The Royal Academy of Music Centenary Festival, July, 1922, and was sung by Clara Butterworth at one of the Queen's Hall Orchestral Concerts. The composer also conducted the work at a Promenade
Concert the following yeac, Miss Butterworth again being the soloist. The poem, written by Arthur L. Salmon , tells of Rosamund, ' Rose of the World,' dreaming of Prince Henry in her cell at the nunnery at Godstow.

This new Suite takes its title from
Mrs. Hemans's poem, ' The World in .the Open Air.' The two movements to be played this evening bear the following quotation from the poem : ' Come, where in freshness and dew it lies, To the world that is under the clear blue skies '
('Mid Pines and Heather). ' It is well to rove where the river leads
Its bright blue vein along sunny meads ' (In the Willow Shade).

The Scherzo is an earlier work and won the Chas. Lucas Memorial
Medal at The Royal Academy of Music. Sir Alexander Mackenzie conducted its first performance at the Queen's Hall, and the composer has conducted the work on many occasions at the Promenade Concerts, Bournemouth, and elsewhere.
