Charity, incensed by her sister's marriage to Jonas and suspecting her father of wishing to marry Mary Graham , leaves home to live in London with Mrs. Todgers, where Mr. Moddle, sadly affected by Mercy's marriage to Another, proposes to her. Meanwhile
Mr. Pecksniff, who appears to be gaining complete control over Mr. Chuzzlewit, takes the old man and Mary Graham to live with him. He forces his attentions on Mary and after proposing to her blackmails her to silence by threatening to use his influence over the old man to Martin's further disadvantage. In her distress, Mary confides in Tom, who is forced to realise Pecksniff's hypocrisy. Mr. Pecksniff is an eavesdropper at this conversation.
Far away in America, Martin and Mark only just survive the rigours of the Valley of Eden; with assistance they are able to return to New York and from there set sail for England.

Explorers and botanists sought the bark of a South American tree which, they suspected, contained the secret of a cure. The secret discovered, the bark was then cultivated in many countries of the East; and now laboratories all over the world are producing synthetic substitutes for the bark.
