Selection of Nursery Rhymes
Alfred Barker , who was for many years leader of the Halle Orchestra, formed his present combination some two years ago. His purpose was, and still is, to present programmes of light music in a virtuoso manner, to which end some of the finest players in the country were engaged. Barker himself was a pupil of the late Adolph Brodsky and spent some years in Russia before the last war. When there he appeared at a Command Performance before the Tsar. Barker's present Orchestra has many North Country musicians among its personnel and could indeed be described as a combination that has combined the talents of the North and South to the best possible advantage.

George Scott-Wood and his Grand Accordion Band

Moeran's tone poem ' Whythorne's Shadow ', scored with exquisite delicacy, is based on the fine and expressive melody of a song by Thomas Whythorne , who lived during the sixteenth century. Moeran has said that the key to his music is the words of the original song :
As thy shadow itself apply'th
To follow thee whereso thou go,
And when thou bends, itself it wry'th, Turning as thou both to and fro : The flatterer doth even so, And shopes himself the same to gloze, With many a fawning and gay show, Whom he would frame for his purpose.
The Magic Mirror'
Hurlstone's fairy suite ' The Magic Mirror ' is based on the story of * Snow-White and the Seven Dwarfs '. It was written when the composer was twenty-six years of age and performed by Sir Henry Wood at the Proms and later at the Crystal Palace.

Mazurka in E minor, Op. 17, No. 2 Nocturne in B, Op. 32, No. 1 Rondo in E flat, Op. 16 played by Pouishnoff Left Pouishnoff is one of the greatest living pianists. While he is a virtuoso of all-round excellence, it is in the music of Chopin and Tchaikovsky that he excels as an interpretative artist. As a student he attended the Petrograd Conservatoire and made his public debut at the age of five. By the time he had graduated from the Conservatoire he had won every principal prize for piano playing, including a concert grand piano.
He first played in England in 1921 at the Wigmore Hall in London and since then has been heard all over the country both on the concert platform and before the microphone. Pouishnoff married Dorothy Hildrcth, the pianist last month. She was once a pupil of his.

Goethe was one of Beethoven's great idols, and his poem ' Egmont ' inspired Beethoven to write an overture and nine incidental numbers. The overture is probably the most perfect of all Beethoven's concert overtures.
Beethoven wrote to Goethe telling him that ' You will shortly receive from Leipzig through Breitkopf and Hartel the music to " Egmont "-Glorious Egmont, with which, through you, I was again impressed with the same warmth as when I read it, and have set it to music. I should much like to know your opinion of it ; even blame will be profitable for me and for my art, and will be as willingly received as the greatest praise.'
