Talk by Brian Vesey-Fitzgerald
played by the BBC Scottish Orchestra : conductor, Guy Warrack Glinka's overture and incidental music to his friend Kukolnik's tragedy Prince Kholmsky contain some of his best work. Yet it was a hurried composition-the whole of the music was written in less than a month-rushed through on the eve of the play's production. As it was, the entr'actes-' each ', as Tchaikovsky said, ' a little picture painted by a master hand ' -were not ready in time and, as the piece was given only three performances, were never performed in the theatre.
