Ravel's ,' Pavane at the Passing of a Princess ' was written first as a piano piece and later scored-a common practice with Ravel. The Pavane is a very old dance, probably derived from Spain. Rabelais, writing in the sixteenth century, speaks of it as one of the 180 dances performed at the Court of the Queen of Lanternois. It is danced as a solemn ceremonial once a year before the altar in Seville Cathedral by the choristers. It is not difficult, therefore. to associate the solemn, measured strains of Ravel's music with the genuflexions that such an occasion would suggest.
Play, adapted from Mrs. Gaskell's story by Jane Stratton. Produced by Howard Rose
