In 1849 a group of immigrants, searching for their lost cattle, came by chance upon a valley so verdantly green that it was immediately christened ' Grass Valley '. There in the heart of Nevada County, California, gold was found, and within a year of its discovery the valley housed a flourishing little town and supported a thrivingpopulationofminerspanning gold. Great mining skill was, however, required, and in order to work the valley successfully miners were sent for from Cornwall. They settled in the valley, and their descendants have been there ever since, working with the skill of their tradition, and never forgetting their home culture, especially their songs. Some of the songs of the Cornish miners from California have been recorded, and it is these that you will hear this afternoon.

Bach Bach 's concertos for a solo performer with orchestra were so often rearranged by his own hand for other instruments that only three concertos for violin have come down to us at the present day in their original form. All of them have slow movements which are among the most serenely beautiful music in existence, though the other movements of the No. I in A minor are a little more austere than some of his purely instrumental pieces.
